The Toll Collect system offers users three different log-on options:
- Automatically using the On-Board Unit (OBU) installed in the vehicle.
- Manually at a toll-station terminal.
- Manually via Internet.
Using an OBU is by far the most convenient method. It ensures that the vehicle has no need to stop or plan advance routings and you receive a monthly toll statement on request with an itemised journey list that is clear and easy to understand. This log on option saves valuable time – and money.
How does the OBU work?
An On-Board Unit installed in the vehicle uses satellite signals (GPS – Global Positioning System) and other positioning sensors to automatically determine which toll route a truck is driving on. The OBU pinpoints the location of the truck and is able to identify its position on any of the 5,400 route segments on more than 25,000 kilometres of the German toll road network (both directions). The On-Board Unit then calculates the toll charge payable, on the basis of the details provided by the user relating to emissions class and number of axles. These toll information are then transmitted to the Toll Collect computer centre using mobile communications.
Toll Collect GmbH – Background Information
Geographically located at the heart of Europe, Germany is a central hub of international truck traffic. Rapid growth in the volume of freight transport has placed a tremendous burden on German roads. This has resulted in increased investment requirements for maintenance and expansion.
Germany has introduced a distance-based toll for all trucks of twelve tonnes gross vehicle weight and above, in order to redistribute these costs to all users - from inside and outside Germany.
In the Scope of a public-private partnership, acting on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany, Toll Collect has set up a toll system that is capable of calculating and collecting road charges based on the distance traveled. In addition, the Toll Collect system ensures that the collection of tolls does not disrupt traffic flow. In contrast to conventional toll systems, Toll Collect does not require vehicles to slow down or stop, or restrict them to a designated lane.
